According to data published by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), total number of incidents of various types of violence against women has shown an ever increasing trend over the last 5 years.

Although number of instances of acid violence has been much less in frequency, it is one of the most heinous crimes and has also recorded steep rise in numbers over the years (rise by nearly 200 per cent in reported cases). Many of these have been as a result of domestic violence although the single largest factor has been rejection of love offers.

The higher rate could be explained by increased crime, but it could also be that more women are lately feeling confident enough to report crimes against them.
